[1] Pojoaque Valley High School mourns student who died in crash – School leaders confirmed Pojoaque Valley High School senior and varsity basketball player Nick Manzanares died in a car crash over the weekend. The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office would only confirm it’s investigating a car that rolled over and killed the driver on I-25 Sunday morning. Assistant principal and head basketball coach Ryan Cordova says Manzanares was an accomplished student and dependable teammate. The team held a vigil for Nick and the school says it’s planning more services in the coming days.
[2] Bernalillo County speed cameras to start issuing citations – Bernalillo County’s new speed camera program will begin issuing citations on Wednesday. The county has installed six cameras on five thoroughfares in an effort to get drivers to slow down. The cameras were operational in August, but speeders were initially sent written warnings. Now, drivers caught speeding could get a $100 citation or a $25 fine with four hours of community service.
[3] Weak cold front & rain-free weather around New Mexico – Despite the chill in the air to start, conditions will once again warm up to above-normal. Compared to yesterday, it’ll be slightly cooler in southern areas as the front dissipates to the southwest, potentially sparking up a few showers in Hidalgo County, while temperatures will rebound more in a big way in northern areas with drier air. Very clear skies will continue for a vast majority of the region.
[4] Navajo Nation leaders call for vote on Radiation Compensation Exposure Act – The fight to reinstate the radiation exposure act continues in Washington D.C. Navajo President Buu Nygren, Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley and others marched in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, urging speaking Mike Johnson to hold a vote on the bill. RECA used to provide financial aid to people suffering from adverse effects caused by living near nuclear testing sites and uranium mines. The act expired earlier this year and efforts to reauthorize it failed.
[5] CABQ, BernCo hosting final 2024 Summer of Nonviolence event – The City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County are partnering to get Albuquerque’s youth involved in the community. They are getting ready to celebrate one last summer of nonviolence event after a successful season. This week’s final theme is to celebrate the day of remembrance by helping those who have lost a loved one to homicide. The last event will take place Saturday at the Albuquerque Community Safety headquarters from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
