Tuesday’s Five Facts

[1] 1 dead in shooting involving Valencia County Sheriff’s Office – State police are investigating after a man was shot and killed by a Valencia County Sheriff’s Deputy. Officials say they were called to the home of Thomas Rodriguez in east Valencia County around 3 p.m. Sunday. Neighbors say Rodriguez was shooting his gun in the air. Deputies had been called to the home multiple times, including to stop a fight between Rodriguez and his neighbor, 51-year-old Michael Gabaldon. Around 10:30 p.m. VCSO was called out again to reports of shots fired. State police say deputies saw one person firing a weapon in the direction of a home. That’s when one deputy fired shots, striking Gabaldon, who died from his injuries. Police later arrested Rodriguez after a SWAT standoff.

[2] Duo arrested after street racing leads to police chase to Edgewood – Two people are facing charges after being accused of leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a high speed chase through the metro and East Mountains. Early Saturday morning, a New Mexico State Police Officer spotted a vehicle speeding on westbound I-40. A criminal complaint states the driver, 20-year-old Jaymin Giron, was weaving in and out of traffic, nearly hitting other drivers on the road. Investigators say Giron was finally stopped in the East Mountains. Giron and his passenger, 18-year-old Eva Fernandez Montoya, were taken into custody.

APD recently arrested Edgar Silva in connection to the fatal crash. They believe Silva was racing with another truck at the time. The driver of the second vehicle, identified as Carlos Lucero, was killed. The state asked for Silva to be kept in custody through trial, but Judge Courtney Weaks denied the motion and Silva was released to pretrial services.
