Netflix’s Menendez Story Revives Milli Vanilli

Streams for Milli Vanilli have skyrocketed by double in the last couple of weeks after Ryan Murphy’s latest outing in the Monster anthology series, The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, featured multiple tunes by the duo.

In the first episode alone, three songs by the German-French pop music duo (Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan) featured in The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story: Girl You Know It’s True, Girl I’m Gonna Miss You, and Blame It On The Rain – the opening episode is even named after the latter song.

According to a recent Billboard report, Blame It On The Rain has seen a whopping 68% increase in streaming activities, rising from 75,000 streams in the US from 13-16 September to 125,000 streams in the days following the series premiere on Netflix (20-23 September).

Blame It On The Rain isn’t the only Milli Vanilli song resonating with audiences. Girl You Know It’s True also saw an impressive boost in streaming numbers, gaining by 32.5% during 20-23 September.

However, Girl I’m Gonna Miss You had the most impressive outing, growing in streams by 258%. Pre-Menendez Story, the track was only getting 28,000 streams (13-16 September), but after the series’ premiere, the song got up to 103,000 streams.

Following their synch in The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, Milli Vanilli’s discography has gained 114% in streams, at over 550,000 from 20 to 23 September.

Of course, Milli Vanilli are best known for the tracks mentioned above, as well as something far more dramatic: the removal of their Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards after it had been discovered that they’d been lip-synching.

A self-titled documentary about Milli Vanilli was released last October. It tracks the duo’s meteoric rise to fame and eventual fall using archival footage, interviews with the two members, and record executives.

Writing for RogerEbert.com, reviewer Christy Lemire said of the documentary, “The retelling of events that would become Milli Vanilli’s ultimate undoing…emerges as a thrilling and stomach-turning adventure.”
