The Dublin band delivered their woozy rendition of the US singer-songwriter’s 2023 track while appearing in the Radio 1 studio on Wednesday (October 2) for Live Lounge Month.

The cover comes just over a year since Del Rey officially dropped the song herself. Recorded back in 2013, the standalone track was originally intended to feature on her third studio album ‘Ultraviolence’, and snippets of the song made their way onto social media over the years before the singer-songwriter officially released it.

Fontaines frontman Grian Chatten has made no secret over the years that he’s a fan of the ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer.

This August they played Reading & Leeds on the same day as Del Rey, after the band once claimed that they thought they could write “a really good tune” with her.

“Yeah, I’m going to muscle my way past security and pitch the living fuck out of our band to her!” Chatten joked when NME asked in a recent video interview if they might try and connect at the festival.

“I’m going to bring all my Lana Del Rey records for her to sign as well. No, I don’t really have any interest in pushing for anything in that kind of way. If it happens naturally, then it happens naturally. I’ve no expectations. She doesn’t need to do it, we don’t need to do it, it would just be nice for me as a fan.”

Explaining his songwriting ambitions with the ‘A&W’ singer, Chatten told NME during a 2022 Cover interview: “I just want to write some tunes with her.

Her music leans into an era of cinema that I love, and she writes in a way where people can find stories in her music. I honestly think we’d do a really good tune together.”

Fontaines released their fourth album back in August, which NME said in a five-star review were “knockout, spiritual songs for the end of time”.

It added: “The ever-evolving five-piece enter a new phase of transformation on their arresting fourth album – their most considered and intricately crafted work yet.”

However the band’s current US tour got off to a rocky start when they were forced to cancel their first show due to Chatten coming down with an illness that was impacting his voice.

They cancelled a further two shows before they were able to resume as planned.

Later this year, Chatten and co. will embark on their 2024 UK and Ireland headline tour, ahead of a huge outdoor show at London’s Finsbury Park, due to take place on Saturday July 5, 2025 – their biggest headline performance to date.

The group also just announced a massive 2025 Manchester show at Wythenshawe Park.

In recent news from Del Rey, meanwhile, the singer has reportedly just married alligator tour guide Jeremy Dufrene.
