Today, Oct. 2, Faye Webster surprised fans with a new single, “After The First Kiss,” out now via Secretly Canadian. “After The First Kiss” arrives at the tail end of a sold-out headlining tour in support of 2024’s Underdressed at the Symphony, where Webster shared the track in Jacksonville, Fla., before sharing it with audiences at iconic venues like Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The beloved singer-songwriter also released an accompanying music video directed by long-time creative collaborator Kyle Ng.
Like the standout tracks on Underdressed at the Symphony and 2021’s Atlanta Millionaires Club, “After The First Kiss” is sweet, sensitive, and sincere. In trademark Faye Webster fashion, the song’s lyrics are direct and poignant, transformed by her delicate and ethereal vocals. Soft strings underscore the title line in phrases like “She got me callin’ her ‘wife’ / After the first kiss” and “I take her picture when I close my eyes / After the first kiss,” amplifying the romantic, whirlwind love affair Webster chronicles in the song and companion music video.
Set in a grassy field at sunset, the Ng-directed video tracks a comic battle between two teams clad in grotesque masks and medieval outfits, complete with inflatable centaurs and plastic weapons. The LARP-esque battle plays out slowly while a green-faced, disguised Webster strums along on an equally green guitar. As Webster and fellow masked musician Deb Never realize they are the sole ‘survivors,’ they drop their weapons to share a kiss.
Webster has just three more stops to go on her sold-out North American headlining tour, including Salt Lake City’s The Union on Oct. 3 and The Mission Ballroom in Denver the following night, Oct. 4. California-based indie-folk artist Miya Folick will join Webster for both Mountain State performances. Then, Webster is set to close the year at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego on Nov. 15 with Brooklyn-born singer and producer Laila!
