As the two slowly move ahead Martel is suddenly shot in the head while Ruzek is looking back. He turns around and is shocked to see Martel’s lifeless body. Thus, Martel tragically loses her life leaving all the fans shocked.
As fans are aware, Victoria Cartagena’s Emily Martel had just joined the series seemingly replacing Tracy Spiridakos’s Hailey Upton. However, it is revealed that she was always part of the unit. She returned to the force after an extended mental leave due to the trauma of her partner’s murder. Nevertheless, Martel’s short stint in the show has left viewers confused.
In an interview with NBC Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan addressed this complicated turn of events. She stated: ”We’re exploring death for two episodes this season, and it is sort of the catalyst for the theme of this season, which is crisis of self and identity and so much of that, you know, has to do with the fact that we all know it’s gonna end.”
