Romania To Ban Imports of Eggs, Poultry Meat from Ukraine

RMAG news

Romania’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announces that it is ready to limit imports of eggs and poultry meat from Ukraine. Other EU states are preparing similar measures, and the reproaches brought to the Ukrainians are the same as in the case of cereals.

Romania’s Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, supported Bulgaria’s proposal to ban the import of eggs from Ukraine since September 23 this year in the AgriFish Council and has already asked the European Commission for a solution to protect European farmers from Ukraine’s dumping prices, according to a press release from MADR.

There is a need for an intervention by the European Commission regarding Ukrainian imports of eggs and poultry meat, taking into account the fact that our farmers are subject to certain conditionalities regarding the rearing of birds, which entail much higher costs compared to those of farmers in outside the European Union. We are waiting for a quick decision from the European Commission. Still, I am conveying to the farmers that we are ready to apply the import licensing mechanism, which we have already successfully applied in the case of grain, sugar and flour imports.

The European Union has lifted import restrictions for agricultural products from Ukraine as a result of Russia’s military offensive. It specifies that exceptions and derogations have been established for the member states bordering Ukraine, including the introduction of licensing for certain categories of agri-food products.
