ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A University of New Mexico student noticed a problem and took on the initiative to solve it. Jackie Davis, who is a senior at the college, said there is a busy and “dangerous” spot on Central Avenue that people cross rushing to get to class.

The problem is that there is no crosswalk ensuring safe passage. She notified Albuquerque City Council but realized change wouldn’t happen until she collected her own data. “I need to see how many people are actually crossing because the city is not going to install, you know, a signal for one random lady crossing the street and who is complaining about it,” said Davis.

She found that hundreds of people cross that busy street daily which works out to almost 50 people every hour. The city said they’re looking into that Central and Buena Vista intersection. Davis said she is confident a crosswalk will soon be installed.
