VIDEO: APD chases man after he flees from stolen, crashed SUV

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A felon was reportedly caught in a stolen SUV last month after crashing and running from police in southeast Albuquerque. Body cameras were rolling when they took him down and showed what they discovered inside of that car.

In September, an Albuquerque Police Department officer was near Central and Wyoming when they saw a silver SUV driving by without a license plate. By the time the officer turned the corner, the SUV was on its side.

The driver, later identified as Matthew Hunter, was running away. The officer chased the suspect before help arrived and took him into custody.

When he provided his name, officials said Hunter gave a fake name attached to the vehicle he had been driving, which had been reported stolen. When officers searched the vehicle, they found a gun and a pipe.

Witnesses told police the SUV hit a truck and caused the crash. The only person injured was Hunter, who had some “colorful” words for police and first responders.

Hunter has two prior convictions and is still facing charges for running from police during a DWI checkpoint in early September. He was out and under court supervision when he picked up this new charge.

A judge denied the State’s request to keep him in jail through trial.
