In the wake of her son Benjamin Keough’s tragic suicide in 2020, Lisa Marie Presley made a heart-wrenching decision. She chose to keep his body at their home in Los Angeles for an extended period. In her memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown, she revealed that Benjamin’s body remained on dry ice for two months while she processed her grief. The memoir was completed by her daughter Riley Keough after Lisa Marie’s passing.
Riley Keough recounted how the family navigated this difficult time. Lisa Marie wrote, “Having my dad in the house after he died was incredibly helpful because I could go and spend time with him and talk to him.”
Riley Keough explained, “My mom had my brother in the house with us instead of keeping him at the morgue. They told us that if we could tend to the body, we could have him at home, so she kept him in our house for a while on dry ice.” (via NBC News)
The family maintained the environment for Benjamin by keeping the room at a chilling 55 degrees. Lisa Marie described the emotional significance of this arrangement. She wrote, “I felt so fortunate that there was a way that I could still parent him, delay it a bit longer so that I could become okay with laying him to rest.” This time allowed her to process her grief while remaining close to her son.
During this time, Lisa Marie and Riley decided to get matching tattoos in honor of Benjamin Keough, who had previously gotten their names tattooed on his body. After getting tattoos, Lisa Marie and Riley felt a shift in energy. They sensed that he was communicating a desire to move on. Riley Keough expressed, “We all got this vibe from my brother that he didn’t want his body in this house anymore.”
Ultimately, the family held a funeral service for Benjamin Keough and decided to lay him to rest at Graceland. Tragically, three years after Benjamin Keough’s passing, Lisa Marie died at age 54 from a small bowel obstruction. A month before her death, Riley Keough had promised her mother that she would help complete her memoir. Keough has honored that commitment.
