Watch: Ice-T’s Body Count Tap David Gilmour for “Comfortably Numb” Cover

RMAG news

It’s often the unlikeliest collaborations that prove the most exciting. Today, Ice-T’s rap-metal outfit Body Count proves that adage again with a surprising, and surprisingly hardcore, cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” with none other than David Gilmour himself. The three-decade Los Angeles outfit, famous for controversial, boundary-pushing ‘90s tracks like “There Goes the Neighborhood” and “Cop Killer,” has shared a video to match the cover with captures Ice and Gilmour giving their all to the track.

For his treatment, the iconic rapper (and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star) Ice-T refits the 1971 Pink Floyd classic with new terse, spoken-word lyrics describing the mental toll of witnessing the terrors of our times “For me “Comfortably Numb” is an introspective song—it’s me acknowledging that I’m older now,” the frontman offers in a release. “ I’m telling the younger generation, you’ve got two choices: you can keep the fire burning or you can give up. It’s me trying to make sense of what’s happening, but also pointing out that we’re all in a place where we don’t have to face reality. We’ve got flat-screen TVs and popcorn, and we can just sit back and watch the chaos of the world like it’s a TV show. It doesn’t feel real until it shows up at your door. I’m a little numb, too—we all are.”

In yet another twist, Gilmour notes that he was the party who proposed the collaboration. Across the 6-minute narrative, the legendary guitarist reprises what’s widely regarded as one of his finest performances of all time, going deep with a sprawling solo that brings a fiery intensity to the entirety of the track. “Body Count’s version of Comfortably Numb is quite radical, but the words really struck me,” he commented. “It astonishes me that a tune I wrote almost 50 years ago is back with this great new approach. They’ve made it relevant again. The initial contact from Ice-T was for permission to use the song, but I thought I might offer to play on it as well. I like the new lyrics, they’re talking about the world we’re living in now, which is quite scary. Ice-T and Body Count played in London recently, sadly I couldn’t make it, but if another opportunity came up to play with them, I’d jump at it.”

“Comfortably Numb will appear on Body Count’s forthcoming eighth studio album, set to release on November 22. For more information on the band and tickets for its ongoing tour, visit bodycountband.com/
