ABQ Ride launches new bus problem reporting app, suspension policy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – People causing problems on city buses may soon face tougher consequences. That’s the message from the city of Albuquerque as it launches a slate of new bus safety initiatives.

The city’s new strategies are three-fold including a new way to report problems, bus rider suspensions, and a permanent downtown base for ADP transit officers. “These things together are how we are going to restore safety and frictionless ridership for everyone in Albuquerque, in our bus system, and at our stops reminder,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller.

The city is overhauling how people report bad behavior or problems with cleanliness on buses and at bus stops. There’s a new app called See Say, where riders can make reports to the transit department. Riders can also text or submit anonymous tips through a website. Those tips will be sent straight to ADP’s real-time crime center which will be able to dispatch transit safety officers, if needed. Those safety officers are also now getting a permanent home at Alvarado Transit Center.

Finally, the city said it is launching a new rider suspension policy that can ban someone from riding the bus between seven days and one year. “The manager, when they arrive, they would, we would have a notice, a paper notice form that they will fill out, then they will inform the individual about the duration of the suspension the individual will be able to appeal it,” said Deputy Director Bobby Sisneros, CABQ Transit Department

The city said those suspensions can be filed for violating the “rules to ride “and include having loud portable speaks and onboard drug use. The city said it’s also planning to use data from its new app to be able to dispatch transit officers where they’re needed the most. The city currently has 17 transit officers and said they are looking for four more to be fully staffed.
