Afternoon showers & storms could cause flooding

More rain is expected in New Mexico this afternoon. Temperatures stay warm through the weekend.

Today sees even more rain for the mountain of New Mexico. The Jemez, Sangre de Cristo, Gila, and Sacramento mountains will all see isolated to scattered showers and storms later this afternoon and into the evening. This potentially heavy rainfall means an increased risk of burn scar flooding. The Hermits Peak Calf Canyon, Cerro Pelado, and Ruidoso area burn scars are all under a Flood Watch until 8:00 p.m. on August 2nd.

Temperatures have cooled down enough in eastern New Mexico to not warrant another Heat Advisory today. While most of the state has cooled off, high temperatures are still above average.

Looking ahead to this weekend, Saturday appears to have more widespread rainfall than Sunday. While most of the rain will be concentrated in the mountains, the valleys should see isolated storms on Saturday. Come Sunday the rain will likely be constrained to the mountains. The heavier rainfall on Saturday will bring an increased risk for burn scar flooding. Particularly along the Cerro Pelado Burn Scar. Risk for burn scar flooding will decrease on Sunday, but not go away entirely.
