'Agadoo' Singer Colin Gibb Passes Away

Colin Gibb, the singer of British novelty pop act Black Lace, best known for the 1984 song Agadoo, has passed away at the age of 70.

Gibb was the longest-serving band member, joining in 1976 and performing until his retirement earlier this year. While he did spend time away from Black Lace, cumulatively, he spent more time in the band than any others.

Gibbs’ passing was revealed by his wife, Sue Kelly, who wrote on Facebook: “It is with heartbreaking news that I am letting you all know my dearest husband Colin Gibb died this afternoon.

“I love you Colin, spent 22 years living your agadoo dream, we were due to retire to Spain on Thursday, you were so happy, so looking forward to our new life, now you’re gone.

“As we used to say, always love you forever.”

The band also posted a statement on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our great friend Colin Gibb. Colin was one of the founder members of Black Lace, together with Alan Barton, and will be truly missed by everyone who knew him. We’d like to send his family and friends all our love and support at this extremely difficult time.”

Black Lace’s management, Now Music, said in a statement (via the BBC): “Unfortunately Colin passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon.

“He’d recently announced his departure from the entertainment industry and was looking forward to enjoying his retirement with his wife, Susan.

“We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the news. Colin was the founder member of Black Lace, together with Alan Barton and they had huge hits through the 80s.

“Colin was a great friend and will be sadly missed.”

Gibb confirmed his retirement from music last month, writing, “All good things must come to an end” in a Facebook post.

“I have decided to retire,” he wrote, informing fans that his final show would take place on Thursday, 16 May.

He continued, “Thanks to all of you that have supported Black Lace over the years, and the thousands of friends I have met during that time, since we set out in 1975.”

Agadoo was the sole Black Lace song to chart in Australia, landing at #16 upon its release.
