Albuquerque Coin Club: The history behind antique car coins

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In the late 1960s oil companies competed for customers more actively than they have in recent years. Several station chains offered collectable items and prizes for customers when they filled up such as antique car coins.

Phil Vitale and Terry Mulcahy from the Albuquerque Coin Club talked more about antique car coins.

According to Vitale and Mulcahy, the aluminum coins were given to customers when they filled their tanks. There were two series of 25 coins each featuring cars from yesteryears. Some coins had “Instant Winner” reverses which qualified the customer to monetary prizes and/or a complete set of coins minted in bronze. These coins have no spendable value, but are an example of collectable numismatic items.
