In June 2022, Joshua Romero and McKenzie were fighting in front of a house on Mimbres Street in northwest Albuquerque. McKenzie pulled out a gun and shot Romero three times killing him.

Before being sentenced, Romero’s mother had a message for McKenzie. “I know that my son would have forgave him for what he did and I have to be a better person and I want him to know that I forgive him for taking my son from me,” said Vanessa Trujillo.

Judge Murphy sentenced McKenzie to four years behind bars. With credit for time served, he’ll be out in three and a half years. Once released, he’ll have five years of supervised probation.
