ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque’s Parks and Recreation Department explained how a hotly debated bill on e-bikes in Albuquerque’s open spaces could be monitored and enforced. Next week, Albuquerque City Council is expected to consider a proposed ordinance to allow all classes of electric bicycles on trails while capping the speed limit to 20 miles per hour.
The Parks and Recreation Department said if the bill passes, they would install speed limit signs and pavement markings on trailheads, along the trails themselves, and in special locations like congested areas. They would have radar and other speed detection devices.
Parks and Rec said the Albuquerque Police Department would be responsible for issuing citations. PSAs, open space staff, and volunteers would be on hand to monitor trails and educate riders as well.
