Albuquerque police boosting efforts to patrol downtown

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) says they are stepping up their patrols and presence in the downtown area this summer. The plan is to help prevent fights and crime as summer brings visitors to local businesses.

“We want people to be able to come and enjoy downtown, but we want everyone to remain safe,” APD Chief Harold Medina said in a press release. “Increasing the number of officers, and supplementing with specialty units will ensure we have enough resources in the area to address incidents. We want people to know there will be zero tolerance in the downtown area for those who want to come out and disturb others or create unsafe environments for residents and officers.”

APD has 10 full-time officers in their Downtown Unit, and the department also plans on increasing the presence of specialty units like horse-mounted patrols. APD is also still conducting proactive patrols through the “TEAMS” (Targeted Enforcement Active Monitoring) initiative, in which businesses can help fund police patrols.
