GKIDS has officially acquired the North American distribution rights to the classic 1985 anime movie Angel’s Egg, which was directed by Ghost in the Shell’s Mamoru Oshii.

As of part of its 40th anniversary celebration, the 4K remastered version of the Angel’s Egg anime movie will be arriving in U.S. theaters nationwide for the first time in 2025. Besides Angel’s Egg, another one of Oshii’s classic movies Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence will also be receiving a theatrical release next month.

“Angel’s Egg has long been a cult classic, an object of fascination among dedicated animation fans,” GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt said in a statement. “After almost forty years, this masterpiece retains all of its beauty and power, and we are thrilled to do our part in bringing the film to a new generation of audiences in the way it deserves to be seen.”

What is Angel’s Egg?

Angel’s Egg was written and directed by Oshii in collaboration with revered Japanese visual artist Yoshitaka Amano. The film featured the voices of Jinpachi Nezu (Patlabor 2: The Movie) and Mako Hyōdō (The Sky Crawlers).

“In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms — a treasure that she believes is an angel’s egg. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Then, one night, the boy crushes her precious egg,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
