APD to release details on police shooting that left suspect dead

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department will hold a news conference on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. to release details on an officer-involved shooting. The shooting left one person dead outside of a Walmart on April 11, 2024.

APD Chief Medina said officers were searching for Adriana Gonzales, who they believed was involved in several armed robberies. Police located Gonzales around 11:35 a.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart near Wyoming and Menaul. Gonzales was with a man identified as Mark Benavidez, police say both Gonzales and Benavidez had warrants for their arrest.

Benavidez walked into Walmart, and officers took Gonzales into custody. When Benavidez came out of the store, officers confronted him. During the confrontation, police say Benavidez grabbed an officer’s firearm and fired multiple rounds. More than one officer shot back, according to Chief Medina. Benavidez was shot and killed, no officers or civilians were injured.
