At DNC, Sen. Alex Padilla says Kamala Harris will defend the American dream

The Democratic National Convention may be drawing to a close but the list of California speakers has yet to run out and on Thursday afternoon Senator Alex Padilla took the stage to sing Kamala Harris’s graces.

Padilla fondly recalled the moment he was appointed to fill Harris’s U.S. Senate seat after she was elected Vice President, jokingly saying “I knew and I had some big Chuck Taylors to fill.”

“I was proud to carry on legislation that she championed to protect workers, to safeguard public lands, to provide kids with more access to quality education,” he continued.

In addition to jobs on their resume, Harris and Padilla share several other things in common. They are both the children of immigrants and are committed to building a better future for the next generation, he said.

“To show you how Kamala Harris will treat America’s kids as president, I’ll tell you how she treats mine,” he said. “Whenever she sees Roman, Alejandro and Diego she greets them with kindness and respect, literally meeting them on their level to speak to them and to listen.”

Another key belief the pair share is a commitment to ensuring the American dream remains alive and well, said Padilla, noting that it was that dream, after all, that brought them both to this country.

“Today we know that the dream is out of reach for far too many families,” he said. “Tim Walz is ready to defend the dream, Kamala Harris will defend the dream now and on Election Day each of us must defend the dream too, by working to elect them as vice president and president of the United States of America.”
