Attempted Memorial Day car theft in Winnetka leads to gunshots

Winnetka Police continue to investigate an attempted car theft Monday morning that led to an exchange of gunfire between a homeowner and three suspects, authorities said.

Three unknown people were attempting to steal at least one vehicle parked outside a house on the 400 block of Sheridan Road shortly after 5 a.m. Monday morning when the homeowner noticed them, police said in a statement.

Moments later, both the homeowner and one of the suspects traded gunshots.

“Our preliminary investigation indicates that one of the offenders fired at the homeowner, and the homeowner returned fire,” police said in a statement.

Two suspects left the scene in a car believed to be a 4-door Audi sedan, the other on foot.

The approximate quarter mile stretch of Sheridan Road between Ash Street and Sheridan Road was closed for several hours Monday morning, but police believed this was an isolated incident.

The village’s Memorial Day Parade and Observance occurred as scheduled Monday morning.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.
