Despite being announced years in advance, development and cast updates on Avengers 5 have been scarce. MCU fans have been wondering about the new Avengers lineup and which actors and characters will return in the next crossover event.

But with Marvel reportedly looking at potential directors for it, the project is being called an “ensemble feature” bringing back dozens of MCU heroes, villains, and supporting characters.

Avengers 5 cast rumors include Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston

Originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the movie is yet to be retitled after Jonathan Majors was let go as Kang the Conqueror. Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton also bowed out of helming the film, and Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy reportedly stands as the top choice to direct it.

Per Deadline, Levy is not yet confirmed to take on the role, and Marvel could meet with other directors too. The outlet also stated that with Michael Waldron turning in the latest script of the film recently, Marvel is “working hard” to begin filming on one of its “largest productions to date” next year. Furthermore, over 60 MCU characters could be brought back in the crossover event.

Unlike the previous four Avengers outings where Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and the other original Avengers lineup formed a core group that continued across the franchise, Avengers 5 is rumored to be an ensemble piece.

Actors and characters ranging from MCU veterans, such as Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, to relatively newer faces, including Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, could return alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, among others.

Plot details for Avengers 5 are under wraps with no updates yet on how Marvel will alter the narrative following Jonathan Majors’ exit. Whether a new villain replaces Kang or whether the role is simply recast remains to be seen.

Avengers 5 is currently set to release on May 1, 2026. Before that, Marvel will set up the crossover by launching at least five films until 2025, which include Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four, and Blade.
