On Wednesday, Sept. 18, BADBADNOTGOOD stopped by Blue Note New York for the third show in its four-night residency. From Sept. 16 to 19, the eclectically inspired Toronto-based jazz trio of Leland Whitty, Alexander Sowinski, Chester Hansen brought their signature blend of fusion, funk, global beats, hip-hop and more to the jazz club with enough featured performers to fill out the stage. Beyond the special guests, which included Nick Hakim on night one and Tim Bernardes and Julius Rodriguez on night two, the band welcomed a range of backing performers including percussionist Juan Carlos Medrano Magallanes, guitarist Tyler Lott, longtime tour keyboardist Felix Fox-Pappas and trumpetist Kae Murphy, who brought attention to the obscure Electronic Valve Instrument with a stirring sound. The band that joined them onstage was the same that lent its talents to the studio sessions behind its recent surprise trio of Mid Spiral EPs (Chaos, Order and Growth); beyond those tracks, the ensemble worked in a diverse array of covers, including Billy Cobham and George Duke’s “Almustafa the Beloved.”
