BCSO: Couple faces abuse charges after 1-year-old suffers injuries

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — A couple is facing child abuse charges after Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to reports of a one-year-old having serious injuries.

Back on April 20, Bernalillo County deputies were called to UNMH after doctors reported a 13-month-old having fractures to her arms, legs, foot, and several ribs.

The child’s mother, Alexis Bernal, said the injuries were from the baby’s leg getting stuck in a baby carrier, but doctors claimed her injuries were not consistent with that story.

Police spoke with several people in the child’s life, who say the only recent change to her life was her mother’s fiance, Augustine Solis Baca.

The child’s daycare teachers told police they started noticing a change in behavior back in January as well as bruising and pain in her leg and ribs.

Both Bernal and Solis Baca were arrested and booked into MDC on Friday. They’re facing charges of abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm.
