Bernalillo County GO Bond would provide funding for parks and rec projects

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Early absentee voting started earlier this week in New Mexico. Along with casting ballots for candidates, voters can also choose to support General Obligation (GO) Bonds. These GO bonds provide additional funding for local projects.

In Bernalillo County there will be six GO Bonds. GO Bond Question Three could send $11.7 million in funding to parks and recreation projects in and around Albuquerque. Over $2 million is specifically earmarked for the Mesa Del Sol Sports Complex. “For Mesa Del Sol, the next two synthetic turf fields will be what’s invested in with the funding that we’re showing for this bond cycle,” Bernalillo County Parks and Rec Planning Manager John Barney said.

Officials hope will make the city a destination for regional sports tournaments. “There’s certain regional tournaments that can be attracted to the location. For all the people coming from out of state, they stay at hotels, it’s like a mini-version of Balloon Fiesta. They stay in hotels, they got restaurants, they buy things,” Barney said.

If GO Bond Question Three passes, there are ten other parks and rec projects where money will be used. Projects include maintenance, improvements and construction on community centers, parks and aquatics centers around the county. “The GO Bonds were the primary source of funding for all those aquatics center. North Valley aquatics, South Valley aquatics, Rio Grande pool, our indoor pool. All of those benefitted greatly form GO Bonds. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without them,” Barney said.

The funding for these GO Bonds comes from state and federal grants and will not increase taxes. Early absentee voting for Bernalillo County began October 8.
