Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office unveils new helicopter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After two years of work, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its new helicopter on Tuesday. It will replace the Metro 2 helicopter which crashed two years ago killing four first responders on board.

“Metro 2 was a Vietnam-era Huey. All analog. This aircraft is all digital. Two digital engines, so it’s multi-engine, compared to the original Huey which was a single-engine. Tons and tons of warning systems and sensors and lots of stuff to let us know if anything is going wrong with this aircraft while we are in flight, and it’s perfectly capable of flying on one engine at a time,” said Air Unit Supervisor and Pilot Sgt. Charles Lill.

The new helicopter is still months away from fully entering operations.
