Billy Ray Cyrus has “vehemently” denied accusations of abuse from his estranged wife Firerose, and alleged that he was “physically, verbally and emotionally” abused by her during their marriage.
In new court documents filed on Monday (June 24), Cyrus referred to claims he had abused his wife as “mind boggling”. Though he admits to being “vocal, frustrated and angry” with Firerose, he demanded “strict proof” of her abuse allegations. The documents also list Cyrus’s manager, Scott Adkins, as a witness to events.
Cyrus filed for divorce from Firerose in May, less than a year after their marriage in October 2023. The court documents cite the reason for divorce as irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct. Cyrus is also seeking an annulment on the grounds of fraud, claiming that Firerose lied about her last name and being married twice before.
The new documents come after Firerose filed a complaint in a Tennessee court earlier this month, which alleged that Cyrus was “unpredictable and volatile” during their marriage. Her attorney wrote “Wife was the victim of extreme verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse,” on June 14. Firerose, who was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene linked to breast cancer, also alleged that Cyrus filed for divorce a day prior to a planned, preventative double mastectomy.
Cyrus has now disputed those claims, alleging that Firerose previously threatened to tell the public that he left her because she was getting a double mastectomy, if he filed for divorce.
The pair met while Cyrus was working on Hannah Montana, the show that launched daughter Miley Cyrus‘ career. They then collaborated in 2021 on the song ‘New Day’, before getting engaged in September 2022.
Earlier this year, Miley Cyrus addressed rumours of estrangement from her father in an interview with David Letterman.
Speaking on Letterman’s Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Miley said “I’m grateful for being able to watch him ahead of me. He’s almost given me this map. And there’s a map of what to do and what not to do, and he’s guided me on both […] I also inherited the narcissism from my father.”
In 2019, Cyrus joined Lil Nas X and Miley on stage at Glastonbury Festival to perform their hit single ‘Old Town Road’.
