Blak Day Out, the event presented by Blak Social that was set to open the festivities of this year’s Open Season in Brisbane, has been postponed. The event will now be the festival’s closing party, held on Saturday, 24 August.
According to a statement shared by organisers of First Night: Blak Day Out, the event can no longer go ahead tomorrow (Saturday, 1 June) due to wild weather extremely likely to wash over the King Street Precinct’s free, all-ages party.
“Don’t rain on our parade, they say… Well, unfortunately, after a lot of careful consideration, we’ve had to make the tough decision to move First Night: Blak Day Out to another night when it won’t be bucketing down,” festival organisers wrote.
Elaborating on the weather conditions, they added that tomorrow’s forecast looks particularly dire, mentioning “90% chance of rain, up to 20mm” from the late afternoon into the evening.
“The new date will be Saturday 24 August, and instead being the opening party of Open Season, it will be the closing party instead,” the statement continued.
“We’re super upset that we couldn’t go ahead this Saturday like planned but are looking forward to bringing you an even more stunning event in August. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more updates.”
Event organisers are in conversation with the acts on the bill – headliner Emma Donovan and additional acts 3% (the hip-hop collective made up of Angus Field, Dallas Wood, and Nooky), Velvet Trip, BADASSMUTHA, The Ancient Bloods and Kritty – and stated that “it looks like most” will be available for the new date. Once confirmed, the official final line-up for First Night: Blak Day Out will be revealed.
Open Season is Brisbane’s flagship live music and arts program, presented by The Tivoli and the Princess Theatre. A months-long celebration of music and arts, this year’s season kicked off on 20 May and runs until 1 August.
This year’s bill features headliners Explosions In The Sky, as well as Sky Ferreira, Yves Tumor, Blonde Redhead, Marlon Williams, Regurgitator, The Paper Kites, Forest Claudette, DICE and more.
