BNR Replaces Banknotes for Romanian Who Kept Them in a Stove

The National Bank of Romania published images of stacks of badly damaged 100 and 200 lei banknotes, which a Romanian kept in the stove. BNR officials also explained the reason why they replaced all these banknotes with new ones.

“RON banknotes are also affected by the high temperatures”, is the message of the clip with hundreds of burnt banknotes published by the BNR on social networks.

“The owners brought them to the headquarters of one of the BNR branches to be exchanged. Since, following the verification, the banknotes met the criteria – they showed the identification elements (series and number) and, even if they were burned, they did not lack more than 40% of the surface – the exchange operation could be carried out and their value was returned in full , the central bank stated in an Instagram post.
