Bright Eyes have announced Five Dice, All Threes, the band’s first full-length entry in four years, set to release Sept. 20 via Dead Oceans. Recorded and self-produced at the band’s Omaha, Neb. studio, the project marks Mike Mogis, Conor Oberst and Nate Walcott’s tenth studio record together. Alongside the core trio, Five Dice, All Threes features Cat Power, Matt Berninger of The National and Alex Orange Drink of The So So Glos as special guests.

Named after a “perfect roll” in a game of threes, Five Dice, All Threes strives for just that, embracing lyrical intricacy and engaging, crystalline arrangements in trademark Bright Eyes fashion. The band encourages close listening to songs on both the finer line level and to their interaction in the project’s greater narrative, a tried-and-true method that has won the trio a passionate, multigenerational fan community since ‘95.

This commitment to the arc shines through in the record’s lead single, “Bells and Whistles,” which teems with pop culture allusions through its upbeat romp. “This is a song about the many little details in life that can seem insignificant or frivolous or temporary at the time but eventually end up forming your destiny,” Oberst explains. “And it’s also kind of a whistle while you work scenario.” The accompanying music video, directed by Josh Boone, tracks the bandmates through their Nebraska hometown, passing through a teleporting photobooth and burly barroom on the way to the stage.

To support its forthcoming album, the alternative outfit also detailed a number of fall tour dates. Bright Eyes will kick off the North American run with a Sept. 19 show at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Steel, followed by a hometown set at Steelhouse Omaha in Omaha, Neb. on Sept. 22. In November, Bright Eyes will bring their show to Europe, with performances in the U.K., the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Norway.
