Childish Gambino Sends Shoutout To 'Bluey' On New Track 'Survive'

Today is a bittersweet day for Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) fans, who just released his final album under the moniker, Bando Stone And The New World. But it’s a bit of a nicer day now that we know that Donald Glover is just like the rest of us: he loves Bluey, too.

As Double J’s Alister Newstead pointed out on X (formerly known as Twitter), the rapper and actor dropped a line referencing Bluey on one of the tracks, Survive.

Newstead captioned a screenshot of the lyrics from Genius (yep, they’re already online), “Not Donald Glover shouting out Bluey on his final Childish Gambino album.

“Aussie kids TV [handshake emoji] South Compton Gangs”.

Childish Gambino raps in the soulful, sax-infused album highlight: “Try to live below your means, that’s a pro tip/ ‘Cause them streams pay a n**** like a slow drip/ With my son, watching Bluey like we both Crip”.

You can listen to Survive below.

Childish Gambino is far from the first artist to show love for Bluey. Earlier this year, Australia’s own Meg Washington sang the song—Lazarus Drug from her album Batflowers—that made you cry during that 28-minute episode of Bluey.

In March, popular US pop-rock act the Jonas Brothers hung out with Bluey’s musical composers on their first-ever Australian tour.

On stage, the Jonas Brothers paid tribute to Bluey after an intermission, taking to the stage and performing a unique rendition of the series’ theme tune. Footage of the honour went viral on TikTok, with one fan’s video gaining 2.7 million views in 15 hours and well over 2,000 comments.

Last year, Lin-Manuel Miranda visited the Bluey studios in Brisbane after having a feature on the show the year before.

Miranda sees his appearance in Bluey as a high point in his incredible career. In an interview with Collider, he stated, “The show we watched the most during the pandemic was Bluey – because it is the only kids’ show that the whole family can be hysterically laughing at.”

Childish Gambino dropped his new album after announcing his tour of Australia and New Zealand, marking his first stops down under since 2019. Glover will be accompanied by special guest Amaarae on all dates, with demand leading to additional dates being announced in Sydney and Melbourne.
