CIF Southern Section has ‘backup’ plans to deal with Calpreps’ shutdown

Calpreps.com, the website that provides high school football team rankings used by the CIF Southern Section, announced Sunday that it has ceased operations indefinitely.

Calpreps posted on its website that Maxpreps.com and its parent company, CBS, have not paid money owed to Calpreps.

“We are out of funds at this point and have been forced to cease operations,” Calpreps stated.

Eric Maddy, who runs Calpreps with Ned Freeman, declined comment Monday.

In addition to providing scores and schedules for football throughout the state, Calpreps also provides rankings that are used by CIF-SS to determine the playoff divisions.

CIF-SS assistant commissioner and spokesman Thom Simmons said the section has contingency plans in place.

“We always knew this was possible,” Simmons said. “We have at least three backup plans.”

Simmons said the Southern Section might explore working with Calpreps personnel Freeman or Maddy individually to use ratings for football, or the Southern Section could pursue Masseyratings.com that also produces computer ratings of high school football teams.

The Southern Section has used Masseyratings for lacrosse, softball and more for placing teams in playoff divisions.

In football and many other team sports, teams are placed into playoff divisions according to their rating at the end of the regular season.

The CIF-SS constitution does not specify which ratings system must be used. It states: “Schools will be evaluated and placed into divisions on a yearly basis for the sports listed above utilizing a formula based entirely on current regular season results.”
