City of Carlsbad approves trial ban on single-use plastic bags

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Carlsbad’s City Council approved a trial run on a single-use plastic bag ban Tuesday night. The trial period will last for two years and will begin on February 1, 2025.

Under the ban, restaurants and retailers within the city are not allowed to offer plastic bags to customers. Instead, they are encouraged to provide paper or reusable bags for free or for a small charge.

Taos County restarts recycling program with hopes of reducing landfill waste

Councilor Mary Garwood helped draft the ordinance and says it got unanimous support at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. Garwood said the idea behind the ordinance is to keep the area litter-free and to protect animals.

Santa Fe County passed a similar ordinance this year and banned plastic bags in unincorporated areas of the county.
