City of Carlsbad to consider ban on single-use plastic bags

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Carlsbad is considering a ban on single-use plastic bags within city limits. Under the proposed ordinance, retail establishments within the city would not be allowed to give out plastic bags. Instead, they would be encouraged to offer multi-use or recyclable ones for free or a small charge.

The proposal said its purpose is to protect the city from widespread litter and the death of animals such as livestock, pets, and wildlife. If approved, any business found in violation would receive a written warning with fines up to $500 for each offense on further instances.

Carlsbad City Council is expected to vote on the ordinance later this month. Santa Fe County passed a similar ordinance earlier this year and banned plastic bags in unincorporated areas of the county.
