ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – City leaders have revealed a location for new transitional housing for young adults.
The city purchased the San Mateo Inn near Prospect and will convert it into housing for roughly 30 homeless adults from 18 to 25 years old.
“Across the community of service providers and government, everyone agrees that we need to do more for young people who need help and support to get housing,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Purchasing this property takes a big step forward towards bringing these services to life.”
A person will be able to stay there for about 90 days. The center is also located near a bus stop, making it easier to get around town.
The center will be the city’s first transitional housing for young adults.
“Young adults can fall through the cracks if they’re aging out of foster care and other systems or leave home at a young age and have to navigate complicated bureaucracies,” said HHH Director Gilbert Ramirez. “We’re creating a new place where we can support their success and self-sufficiency while they’re young, and mitigate the potential for perpetual homelessness.”
Work is expected to begin later this year, and the city hopes it will be up and running by next summer.
