NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – During a legislative finance committee meeting Thursday, the legislative education study committee discussed educator retention and some of the reasons teachers are leaving the classroom.

The committee says the number one reason teachers are leaving is a lack of support in the classroom. They say class sizes also seem to be a driving factor. For the past two years lawmakers have attempted to address classroom size, but bills stalled due to lack of teachers in the state. According the report, reducing class sizes by five students would cost the state approximately $39.4 million and would require an additional 513 teachers.
