Cooler Tuesday, but heating up again later this week

A cold front is moving through New Mexico Monday night. Temperatures briefly cool down Tuesday before record heat returns again late this week.

It was a record hot end to September across parts of New Mexico, with record highs getting broken in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Socorro, Las Vegas, and Silver City. Scattered showers and storms have developed Monday afternoon across the mountain ranges in the state. These showers and storms are coming to an end tonight, but a cold front will be moving through the state from the northeast. The front will bring in gusty winds along and behind it. By 7 AM Tuesday in Albuquerque, east winds could gust to around 40 mph, with windy weather in southeast New Mexico too. These winds will slowly die down through the day Tuesday, with high temperatures sitting anywhere from 5° to 10° cooler than today.

High pressure starts bringing back warmer temperatures again on Wednesday. This warming trend continues through Friday with yet more record and near-record high temperatures, including Albuquerque.

The first weekend of Balloon Fiesta will be warm! Light winds in the early mornings should allow for all balloons to take flight during the first weekend’s Mass Ascensions. Low temperatures will be down into the mid 50s, but afternoon highs will be in the mid and upper 80s.
