Cyndi Lauper has opened up about her alleged feud with Madonna and how she would have “liked to have a friend”.
Since her breakout in the ’80s, there have been rumours that the eccentric pop icon and Madonna were not the biggest fans of each other.
Now, the ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ singer has sat down with The New York Times to discuss her upcoming ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour’, and taken the time to address the alleged feud between her and the ‘Holiday’ singer.
Lauper denounced the claims, saying that both artists were put against each other by the media. She shared that their music stands out for different reasons. “It was like apples and oranges…I would have liked to have a friend,” she told the publication.

Back in 2017, the ‘The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough’ singer criticised Madonna‘s Women’s March speech, saying “I don’t think that it served our purpose because anger is not better than clarity and humanity, that is what opens people’s minds,” while appearing as a guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
Last year, Cher reflected on her feud with Madonna in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. The ‘Believe’ singer shared: “We buried that hatchet a long time ago because I called her something so much worse, and she forgave me.”
Elsewhere, it was recently revealed that Madonna’s 1984 hit ‘Like A Virgin’ had a major connection to Lauper as the song was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly – the duo behind her 1986 ballad ‘True Colors’.

Prior to her farewell tour, Lauper is due to play an “exclusive” greatest hits show at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Wednesday, June 26, ahead an appearance at Glastonbury Festival later that weekend. It’ll mark Lauper’s first UK solo concert in eight years.
Lauper is also slated to release an upcoming documentary titled Let The Canary Sing. It seeks to offer fans a deep dive into the pop icon’s storied career and legacy through archival footage and interviews with Lauper herself, as well as other prominent names in music including Boy George and Patti LaBelle among others.
The upcoming documentary will also chronicle Lauper’s impact as an activist for queer rights and allyship, as well as women’s rights. It is due for release on the Paramount+ streaming platform exclusively on June 4 in the United States and Canada, followed by release in the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria on June 5.
