Daniel Johnston’s ‘Artistic Vice’ is set to be reissued with previously unreleased music, five years after the musician died at the age of 58.

The new ‘Artistic Vice Collector’s Edition’ is set for release on October 18, and features an entire second LP of outtakes, rehearsals and previously unreleased songs meant for the original album in 1991.
The reissue features words from Johnston’s EYE Band bandmates – ‘Artistic Vice’ was the first album on which the late musician fronted a band.
Also included are a lyric booklet with rare photos and coloured peach and light blue vinyl. The producer Kramer, a friend and collaborator of Johnston, remastered the record. ‘Artistic Vice Collector’s Edition’ is available for pre-order here.

This year, Johnston’s song ‘True Love Will Find You In The End’ was performed by Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux, while some of his artwork is featured in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice too.

Johnston, a hugely influential figure in outsider and lo-fi music, inspired musicians including Kurt Cobain, Sonic Youth, Mac Miller, Lana Del Rey and Cage The Elephant.
He died after suffering a heart attack on September 10, 2019, his former manager Jeff Tartakov confirmed at the time, leading to a rush of tributes from the world of music.
Beabadoobee told NME: “I was going to write Daniel Johnston a letter. I have a draft of it in my diary, but I never finished it. It was gonna say: ‘You’re such an inspiration; you’re amazing. Everything I do is because of you! I just wish I could meet you and maybe work with you one day,’” while a year after Johnston’s death, Kid Cudi shared a tattoo in tribute to him and Cobain.
Johnston’s family said in a statement via the Hi, How Are You Project, a project inspired by the singer to encourage open conversation around mental health: “Daniel was a singer, songwriter, an artist, and a friend to all. Although he struggled with mental health issues for much of his adult life, Daniel triumphed over his illness through his prolific output of art and songs. He inspired countless fans, artists, and songwriters with his message that no matter how dark the day, ‘the sun shines down on me’ and ‘true love will find you in the end.”
Last December, a ‘Daniel Johnston In The 20th Century’ discography collection was announced, remastering his first 14 releases.
