PinkPantheress has gone viral for explaining why she makes short songs and stating that “we don’t need to have a bridge” – comments that have stoked discussions about songwriting and now garnered a response from Dionne Warwick.

PinkPantheress shared her opinions on song lengths in an interview on ABC News last Friday (May 24), the same day she released her first song of the year, ‘Turn It Up’. Explaining why her own songs are on the short side, the British artist explained that “making short songs was just a result of me experimenting”.
“A song doesn’t need to be longer than 2 minutes 30 [seconds], in my opinion,” the 23-year-old told journalist Ashan Singh. “We don’t need to repeat a verse, we don’t need to have a bridge, we don’t need it. We don’t need a long outro.”
A Twitter/X post of Pink’s quote, shared by the pop culture account Pop Crave, went viral on the platform. And today (May 29), Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 inductee Dionne Warwick shared it – at first reacting with nothing but a question mark. Warwick’s post garnered over 30,000 likes and responses from users, many of whom seemingly interpreted it as a diss towards PinkPantheress.
However, Warwick followed up to clarify her reaction, stating that she wasn’t out to “get” PinkPantheress. “Artists are allowed to create their art in any way they choose,” she wrote. “However, I do believe a bridge is important.”

Many other Twitter/X users besides Warwick have reacted to PinkPantheress’ comments. “heartbreaking: the best person you know made an awful point”, wrote @neinmuse, while @offbeatorbit tweeted “Love her but I can’t support the anti-bridge agenda, babes, I just can’t”.
Other users responded by sharing their favourite bridges from modern pop songs, including Lana Del Rey‘s ‘Shades of Cool’, Red Velvet‘s ‘Chill Kill’, and Olivia Rodrigo‘s ‘Drivers License’.
PinkPantheress’ new single ‘Turn It Up’ arrives following the conclusion of her ‘Capable Of Love’ tour, which NME rated four stars when it landed in London in February. Now, she’s preparing to tour Australia for the first time, where she’ll open for Coldplay on the Australasian leg of their ‘Music of the Spheres’ world tour and play a few headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
She is also set to appear on Kaytranada‘s forthcoming album ‘Timeless’, due out June 7, on the song ‘Snap My Finger’.
