Disney crackdowns on the sharing of subscriptions to its streaming service

Disney is cracking down on the users who share their streaming accounts with other people, with the announcement of an ‘Extra Member’ in its subscription offering.

In a blog post published on Wednesday (September 25) the company says the expansion will give people more ways to “enjoy their Disney+ subscription along with a family member or friend.”

Going forward, anyone who wishes to share a Disney+ account with someone outside of their household must either pay for their own subscription or be added as an ‘Extra Member’ for an additional fee.

In the United States, an Extra Member profile will add another $6.99 to the monthly bill for those on the most basic plan. Those with Disney+ Premium subscriptions will have to cough up an additional $9.99 per month for someone living outside of their household to be on the plan.

The added member will only be able to stream on one device at a time and only one slot is available per account.

The feature has now been brought to the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Disney will now prompt outside users to create a new subscription

“Your Disney+ subscription is meant to be used within your Household, which is a collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside there,” warned the company.

If someone who lives in a different household attempts to watch the streaming service on another person’s account, they’ll be unable to do so. A screen will pop up with the words ‘This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the Disney+ household for this account.’

It will also say ‘If this TV isn’t part of the account household, create your own account to continue streaming,’ with a button visible to start a new subscription.

For those who are simply watching away from home, they can select the ‘I’m Away From Home’ button, and a one-time passcode will be sent to the email address associated with the account.
