Today, Sept. 26, Dogs In A Pile officially celebrate the release of their Relix Session vinyl recording. After months of mounting anticipation, the rapidly rising Asbury Park, N.J. jam band’s new offering sets an intimate recording session to two striking 140g transparent red splatter LPs. A limited edition of 1,000 units is available on Relix Marketplace now.
Beyond longtime fan favorites like “Look Johnny,” “Trunk Rum” and “Ugly Song,” Dogs In A Pile’s Relix Session record stands out for the inclusion of “You Didn’t Hear It From Me,” a song gifted to the quintet by Tom Marshall on a fishing trip. Dogs guitarist and vocalist Brian Murray speaks to the origins of the tune in a release-day statement: “We connected with Phish songwriter Tom Marshall through the Asbury Park music scene,” he recalls. “Last year, we did an Osiris podcast event at The Stone Pony with him, where we performed ‘Evolve’ together, co-written by Tom, Trey Anastasio, and Scott Herman.
“After some hangs, he joined us for a boat trip off the coast of New Jersey, where he introduced a song to us that he had co-written with Anthony Krizan from Spin Doctors,” Murray continues. “He thought it would work well for the Dogs. Since its debut, we fell in love with it, and have been taking the jam to some exploratory places. We’re grateful for our friendship with Tom!”
“You Didn’t Hear It From Me,” a funky, vivid, ascendant jam vehicle that changes shape with each staging, appears on vinyl for the first time with the band’s Relix Session recording; “Ugly Song,” “Power Trip” and “Samba for Sam,” which showcase the vibrant variety of the band’s originals, are all also first-time pressings. The recordings featured are drawn from an October 10, 2023 booking in the Relix Studio in New York and arrive as the 11th installation in The Relix Sessions vinyl series.
