DWP and Councilmember Bob Blumenfield give free ACs to low-income residents

The LADWP, the Department of Aging and Los Angeles City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield’s office held a “Cool LA Heat Relief for Seniors” event on Friday, Oct. 11, at the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center in Reseda where free portable air conditioner units were given out to low-income residents over 60.

After many weeks of intense heat in the San Fernando Valley, residents lined up on Friday for the giveaway. The ACs went to qualified DWP customers who showed up and DWP employees helped them load their new ACs into their cars.

In a statement DWP said, “As Los Angeles-area temperatures rise, LADWP has been working with the Los Angeles Department of Aging to host ‘Heat Relief for Seniors’ events. This is the fourth event in the series.”

The events are part of the city’s effort to help customers, especially older adults, deal with extreme heat. The department’s statement noted that “extreme heat endangers the health and well-being of Angelenos living in ‘heat islands’ – areas where the average temperature is hotter than surrounding regions.”
