You do not need to be a football expert to realize that all the greatest managers have their own tactics. Teams play in different ways, from tactics aimed at utilizing speedy wingers and wing backs on the counter-attack, to Pep’s keeping the ball at all costs and probing for gaps, they all do different things that work for them.
A set of tactics is only as good as your players, however. There is no point in playing a fast counter-attacking game if your fastest players can only manage a slow, drunken jog up and down the touchline.
EA FC25 has brought us a new tactics engine that sits beneath the polished veneer of the game and finally gives us a little more strategy to play with. It’s not Football Manager, but it’s a step toward a more expansive strategic experience that nods more to modern football and its intricacies. Gone are the days of Clogger Norris just booting his way through players up the pitch in a Leeds United kit.
What is FC IQ?
What the new FC IQ engine does is a better job of managing the players you aren’t controlling. If you want to set a tactic to create an overlapping full-back when your winger goes forward, a la Kyle Walker at Man City you can, in theory, do this. As you move forward your full-back should attempt to overlap you and get in position for a short ball that they can then cross into the box. If your tactics are on point, the striker will have made their run into the six-yard area and all you need to do is not shank it into the stands. FC IQ cannot help you there.
Now if you have ever got embroiled in messing with tactics in Football Manager you can quickly realise that this is not for you. You can easily make things worse rather than better. That’s where Tactics Codes come in. Let’s have a look.
What are Tactics Codes?
Imagine a system where you could take somebody else’s tactics and import them directly into your game by entering a short alphanumeric string. In the space of about eight characters, I can now turn myself into Pep Guardiola or Carlo Ancelotti. The next time either of those jobs comes up I will be applying, code in hand.
That’s what we have in FC 25 though and it’s great. It’s great because cleverer players than you and I have already been compiling codes and sharing them online for players to try out. We have tactics based around all the great managers and even FC25 eSports pros and influencers have been sharing what they believe to be meta tactics for the game this time around.
How to use Tactics Codes in FC25
To use a Tactics Code in your Ultimate Team head to your sqiad and press your Right thumbstick. This will take you into Team Management mode.
Navigate to the blank tactic and press to import one. Remember the tactics below are case-sensitive so if you get it wrong it won’t work. You can now make your tactic active.
