Election 2024: Nomination period for candidates to get on the Nov. 5 ballot is open

The nomination period for those wishing to run for local offices across Los Angeles County during the Nov. 5 general election is now open.

The November election will feature scores of political offices — local, state and federal — up for grabs throughout Los Angeles County, from Alhambra to Bellflower, from Santa Clarita to Manhattan Beach.

But for some races, the candidates are already known. That’s because they were on the March 5 primary ballot and Nov. 5 will be a runoff. Among the races that will be run-offs are those for Congress, state Senate and Assembly, as well as for some local offices, such as the LA County district attorney and Long Beach’s Fourth Council District. The top-two candidates for those primaries will face off again in November.

But other races in November will be general elections, so potential candidates must file nomination papers. Multiple government agencies, including school districts, city councils and water districts — Downey Unified, Norwalk-La Mirada Unified, Burbank and all four cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, to name a few — have such elections scheduled for Nov. 5.

The nomination period for people who want to get on the ballot for those and other races began on Monday, July 15, and ends at 5 p.m. Aug. 9 — with a caveat. If an eligible incumbent for a given race does not file for relection by the Aug. 9 deadline, the nomination period will be extended to 5 p.m. Aug. 14, according to the Los Angeles County registrar’s office.

Those filing for nomination, according to the registrar’s website, will be required to provide their qualifications for office, a campaign statement and more. To be eligible for office, candidates must be registered voters in the jurisdiction in which they are running.

The first step in getting on the ballot is to fill out a candidate registration and qualification form, according to the registrar’s candidate handbook. That form is available at the registrar’s Norwalk headquarters, 12400 Imperial Highway, or online at lavote.gov. An Application for Nomination Documents will then be prepared, which the potential candidate must sign. Potentially candidates must then file a declaration of candidacy form.

Those who want to be official write-in candidates, meanwhile, can file nomination papers from Sept. 9 to Oct. 22.

As for voters, while Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, the registrar’s office is scheduled to start sending out vote-by-mail ballots on Monday, Oct. 7. Vote Centers will open on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The candidate’s handbook and more information about the Nov. 5 election is available at lavote.gov.
