ENMU takes down NMHU, NMMI falls in season openers

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – There was some college football action featuring New Mexican schools on Thursday night. Division II teams Eastern New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands met up in Las Vegas and NMMI’s JUCO team kicked off its season in Hutchinson, KS.

The Greyhounds and Cowboys combined for 100 total points and 756 rushing yards. Much of that came from ENMU.

The Greyhounds ground game could not be stopped, as they ran for 510 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Mario Sanchez only attempted five passes, completed two, but made them count. He threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

ENMU won the game 63-37.

The Broncos first game under new head coach Oliver Soukup didn’t go as planned. NMMI struggled to contain the Hutchinson offense, specifically on the ground. Hutchinson rushed for 371 yards en-route to a 42-10 win.

Albuquerque native and former Volcano Vista quarterback Elliot Paskett-Bell got his first start for the Broncos. He finished the night 20-39 for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
