The victory is the more important as it took no less than 24 years for our country to be victorious again at the end of a European Championship match.
The team trained by Edi Iordănescu gave up possession in the first part of the game, but managed to open the scoring through Nicolae Stanciu (min 29).
The captain of the tricolors, Nicolae Stanciu, scored with a fabulous execution, after Romania recovered a wrong ball from Lunin. In the second half, Romania’s game continued to be an offensive one, and Răzvan Marin scored for 2-0 (min 53) with a shot placed from about 25 meters. 4 minutes later, the tricolors struck again through Denis Drăguș (min 57), who appeared excellently at the second post and fulfilled a simple formality.
In total, our country’s record in the 17 matches played at the EURO is two wins, five draws and ten defeats.
Coach Edi Iordanescu: This the the soul generation
Romanian coach Edi Iordanescu congratulated his boys at the press conference after the victorious match, saying that this was a victory of the “Soul Generation”.
“I congratulate the boys and hug them. I’m glad that it’s a decisive victory and that we didn’t concede a goal. I am happy for Stanciu that he was declared the man of the match. Our star is the whole team. An analysis will surely follow, maybe there were not very good things. We are happy, from tomorrow we must gather and continue our journey”, said Iordănescu.
“Indeed, the boys were fabulous. I saw that this generation is starting to be called this and that. Please don’t call it anything. This generation does not represent any metal of any kind. It is the soul generation. It must also be the soul generation of Romanians. It was the victory of the Soul Generation. These guys broke a lot of boundaries. They united and gave their best. It is their total merit and I am grateful to them”, Iordănescu also declared in the press conference after the match.
