EURO 2024: Spain Wins Fourth Title with 2-1 Victory Over England

The Spanish national team won the European Football Championship – EURO 2024, on Sunday evening, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, after defeating England in the final, with a score of 2-1 (0-0).

Spain became the first team with four European titles, after those obtained in 1964, 2008 and 2012. Nico Williams (47) and Mikel Oyarzabal (87) scored for “La Roja”, while the English goal was managed by Cole Palmer (73).

After a first half tied (0-0), Luis de la Fuente’s team started the second half strongly and opened the scoring after a quick attacking phase: Yamal entered the center and passed to Nico Williams, who fired at the long corner (47). Immediately, the Spaniards had the chance to break away, but Olmo shot wide (48), after he had been engaged in the box by Williams.

Cole Palmer equalized (73) with a 22-yard shot off a Bellingham turnover.

In min. 87, Oyarzabal, introduced by the Spanish coach instead of Morata, scored the winning goal, with a restart from the edge of the small box after Cucurella’s cross.

Spain managed to win all the matches in this final tournament, beating Croatia (3-0), Italy (1-0) and Albania (1-0) in the group, beating Georgia (4-1) in eighth, Germany (2-1, after extra time) in the quarters, France (2-1) in the semifinals and England (2-1) in the final.

The Spanish teenager Lamine Yamal wrote history by becoming the youngest player to play at the EURO, in the match against Croatia (3-0), at 16 years and 338 days. He then became the youngest scorer in a semi-final 24 days later and on Sunday became the youngest player to play in and win a final at 17 years and a day.

England lost their second final in a row, after being beaten by Italy in a penalty shoot-out three years ago in London.

Gareth Southgate became the third coach to reach two EURO finals, after the Germans Helmut Schoen and Berti Vogts.
