Fans react to The Cure’s first new single in 16 years, ‘Alone’: “So beautiful”

Fans have reacted to The Cure‘s first new single in 16 years, ‘Alone‘ – see their reactions down below.

‘Alone’ is taken from The Cure’s forthcoming record, ‘Songs Of A Lost World’. It will be released sometime today (September 26) via Fiction/Polydor – pre-save it here. The single just had its debut on Mary Anne Hobbs’s BBC Radio 6Music show today at noon, with further “details about the album” soon to be released.

Now, fans have reacted to ‘Alone’, with one YouTube commenter emphasising frontman Robert Smith‘s voice and that it was “insane how little his voice has changed with age”. Another fan agreed that the song “sounds delicious,” comparing it to “‘Plainsong’ meets ‘Underneath The Stars’.”

Redditors have also expressed their delight at the single, with one user writing: “Those synth arpeggios under the main chords in the intro and outro are so beautiful. Makes me feel like I’m watching a space documentary”.

Another commented they were “lucky enough to hear it on tour”, adding: “but hearing the studio version? Speechless. What an absolutely incredible song and everything you could want in a The Cure song. Few bands can keep delivering quality songs like this so far in the game.”

The Cure – Alone (Official Lyric Video)

Today @RobertSmith has made me incredibly happy and desperately sad, touched my heart and shattered it to pieces, magically made me feel 16 and 60. And has made me weep with the most touching version of a song I’ve heard dozens of times. Why isn’t everyone a fan of @thecure?

Earlier this month, The Cure began teasing their new album by sending fans postcards confirming the album title and release date.

A poster then appeared in the Crawley pub where they played their first gig, and the band launched a website dedicated to the album and a Whatsapp channel which sent fans a lyric from ‘Alone’.

It is expected that the fans will be sharing more new information and potentially new music via these channels.

Meanwhile, Smith previously told NME that the Cure’s first album in 16 years would be “merciless” and would “express the darker side of what I’ve experienced over the last few years” – drawing more on the sounds of classic album ‘Pornography’ as “it hasn’t got any of those songs that lighten the mood at all” due to having lost his mother, father and brother in recent years.

In a recent press release, Smith shared of ‘Alone’: “It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus,” said Smith. “I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be.”
